Usage Recommendation
don't use it thumbs down

Indicates a definition of a word or term. Although <DFN> has been around for quite some time, versions of Netscape as late as 3.x do not recognize this tag. 

A <DFN>spud</DFN> is potato.

produces (if your browser supports it)

A spud is potato.
