Besides optimizing your website for major search engines, you may follow the guidelines described below to generate more website traffic.

1. Submit your site to search directories. The most important one is dmoz.org (a.k.a. ODP), a directory used by virtually all search engines. You may also try submitting your site to other free directories. By submitting your site to directories, you'll increase your pagerank.

2. Write articles on your website, and perhaps submit them to distribution sites. By submitting articles to distribution sites such as ezarticles.com and articletrader.com, you'll earn backlinks and free traffic. This requires subject-matter expertise, a long hours of efforts, but rewards may outweight your effort in the long run.

3. Exchange links, especially with sites with high PR. You should always try to exchange link with other sites to increase your site explosure and to increase your Google pagerank. If you can get one way link, that will work much better for your site.

4. Post articles on "high-traffic" forums with your site in your signature. The will increase link popularity, as well as explose other readers to your site.

5. Publish newsletters, ebook and other contents for free distribution. If you need help with articles, you may want to try free articles from content distribution sites.

Submission to relevant directories is very helpful in generating more incoming links, and help bring more traffic into the site. Choosing the appropriate category in a directory is also important.
